Water main replacement
Beginning in September 2023, the City of Rehoboth Beach will replace the water main and some associated piping on Laurel Street between Bayard and Scarborough avenues. This work is part of the city's annual Capital Improvement Plan and is part of the fiscal year 2024 budget.
This work will take several weeks. The road will be closed to through traffic, but accessible to Laurel Street residents; signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic flow. Parking will be restricted while work is underway but allowed in the evenings. Work hours will be 8 am-5 pm weekdays.
Prior to any scheduled water outages, door hanger notices will be posted 48 hours in advance.
Street paving
Once water main work is complete on Laurel Street, the city will resurface the street in that block of Laurel as well as Scarborough Avenue between Hickman and Christian streets.
A more detailed schedule will be provided as it is developed. Homeowners on these streets will receive a letter from the city further explaining the project and suggesting to homeowners that this may be a good time to undertake replacement of the water service line on private property, any needed utility work, and repairs to curb or sidewalk.
The city's annual paving program
As more roadways may need attention than there is available funding for, the city's annual paving program prioritizes roadway sections that offer long-term benefits to the city. The City of Rehoboth Beach routinely inspects roads to determine when and what type of maintenance is needed, looking for common surface deficiencies such as generally deteriorated surfaces, cracks, and pavement distortions. The city considers the pavement's condition, prior maintenance history, traffic and truck volume, and other factors to help determine the most cost-effective treatment and appropriate time to apply the treatment.
