Rehoboth Beach police sergeant retires after 30 years of service

Apr 17, 2018

A longtime member of the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, Sergeant Benjamin Mitchell, has ended his watch over the community, as he recently retired from the force. Mitchell retired March 18 after 30 years of serving the City of Rehoboth Beach. His time with the department had him assigned as a detective, and he was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2002. “We want to thank him for his unending service and tireless commitment to serving his community,” said Rehoboth Police Chief Keith Banks. Mitchell has seen many changes and progress in law enforcement over the years. “I have enjoyed my job and the good friends I have worked alongside. I wish them all success in their careers and to be safe,” said Mitchell. Although Mitchell is retiring from law enforcement, he still plans to be active in the community. In 1989, Mitchell started a police athletic league that included a wrestling team, coed basketball, and flag football. The league grew into the Henlopen Hammers Wrestling Club which Mitchell still runs. In the fall and winter, Mitchell will be working with 302Sports.com producing and announcing high school athletic events throughout the state. “What I’ll miss most is spending time with the good people I’ve worked with through the years,” said Mitchell. “I’m looking forward to relaxing with my wife Kristen and son Trey. After years of shift work I will be home for dinner every night with my family.”
