CodeRED Message March 21

Mar 21, 2018

This is an important message regarding the current weather conditions. Much of the Eastern Seaboard are in store for coastal storms during the next 24 hours, with several inches of heavy, wet snow, strong winds, beach erosion and coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, has issued winter storm and coastal flood warnings for Sussex County, lasting through the early morning hours of Thursday, March 22. Forecasters predict 2 to 5 inches of snow to fall, with much of that occurring during the day Wednesday. Winds out of the east and northeast as high as 50 mph are expected to cause minor to moderate coastal flooding in low-lying areas, especially during high tide, along the Atlantic-facing beaches, Delaware Bay, and around the county’s Inland Bays.

City crews are monitoring the forecast and prepared for the weather conditions. As a reminder, residents and property owners should secure loose objects, such as lawn items and trash cans. Residents in low-lying areas should make sure submersible pumps are working and check storm drains to ensure they are clear of debris, and move vehicles from flood-prone areas to higher ground.

Sporadic power outages could be an issue, however Delmarva Power is committed to an emergency response system that makes safety a priority and restores power as quickly as possible.  Please report outages and downed wires at 1-800-898-8042.

It is important to continue to monitor the forecast and local conditions through television, radio and internet resources.

Please call the Rehoboth Beach Police Department by dialing 9-1-1 for emergencies or 302-227-2577 for information.
