Force main change order approved

The Rehoboth Beach commissioners at their workshop meeting Monday, March 5, by a vote of 5-1, approved a $40,000 ocean outfall force main change order to preserve trees along the Canal Street bank. The contractor for the force main project, A-Del Construction, will begin work March 12 along Canal Street. The force main construction route would have required numerous trees along the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal to be removed which could destabilize the bank. Due to many utilities in the road, the contractor was unable to shift the line toward the center of the road. The contractor and city engineers GHD proposed tying the force main line to a line on Rehoboth Avenue at the cost of $40,000. This tie-in will be to a county force main from Henlopen Acres that ties into the Rehoboth system. An existing manhole connects a pump station at Henlopen Acres to the Rehoboth Wastewater Treatment Plant. An alternative proposal was discussed by GHD to realign the force main at the cost of approximately $154,000. This proposal would require a time extension. The county and GHD will provide more information on increasing the size of the pipe from Canal Street to Sixth Street in several weeks and address the potential overflow.
