The City of Rehoboth Beach will begin early next week replacing 3,800 feet of the aging water main on Henlopen Avenue. The new pipes will not only increase water flow to customers along Henlopen Avenue, but they will also enhance fire-fighting capabilities and improve water supply reliability of the system. The previous 4-inch pipes made from old ductile iron, originally installed in the 1940s, will be replaced with 8-inch PVC pipes. PVC does not rust or corrode and is more cost-effective than other alternatives. “We are pleased to start on this important water system improvement project to ensure our water service remains reliable for our customers for decades to come,” said City Manager Sharon Lynn. “We are committed to making improvements that will serve our customers well during both normal operations and in the case of an emergency.” During the water main work, residents can expect a disruption in water service for an hour or so. It is recommended that whenever water service is turned off and back on again that residents flush the lines by running water until it appears clear. Work will begin at Second Street and continue to Grove Street. While the roadway is opened in sections to add the new water main, crews will reduce traffic on the southside of Henlopen Avenue to one lane as they work to the side. Local driveway access and on-street parking will be restricted in these areas. City crews will contact the affected residents to coordinate and minimize any inconvenience. Work will be performed from 7 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Trash pickup will continue as scheduled and residents should continue to put out their trash and recycling containers as usual.
