Humpback whale washes ashore at Deauville Beach

May 05, 2017

A humpback whale washed ashore at Deauville Beach, off Henlopen Avenue, May 4. MERR has stated this is the fifth humpback whale that has stranded in Delaware in a 10-month period. The whale has been identified by MERR as not fully an adult humpback whale. The whale had markings of boat propeller wounds that MERR suspected were postmortem because they were located on the underside of the carcass. There were also signs of scavenging from sharks and birds. The whale was significantly decomposed on the inside and MERR has found it had not been eating. For information visit merrinstitute.org
