A 23-year-old evergreen will serve as the City of Rehoboth Beach’s official community holiday tree this year.
The tree, donated by Kim Duggan and her children, Wil and Kate, has been a part of their family since 2001, when Kim’s late parents, Russ and Donna Evans, planted it at their then-new Lewes home. The tree initially stood humbly in their front yard; now, it has grown to almost double the size of the house.
The Duggan’s relationship with Rehoboth Beach spans generations. Russ and Donna loved spending time in Rehoboth Beach and the surrounding area after moving to Lewes. The Duggans have attended the tree lighting many times over the years, and the opportunity to share their tree with the community was appealing to the family.
“For us,” Kim Duggan says, “it’s sentimental that more people will see the tree my parents loved and welcome it into their traditions.”
Assisting the city in removing, transporting, and installing the tree this year are Harry Caswell Inc., George W. Plummer & Son Inc., and Delmarva Power. The holiday tree will be installed on Wednesday, November 20, weather permitting.
The tree lighting will take place Friday, November 29, at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. The Cape Henlopen Holiday Band will begin the festivities at 6 pm. The sing-along with Clear Space Theatre starts at 6:30, to be followed by the tree lighting.
