Stormwater outfall repair work begins at Maryland & Virginia Avenues

Mar 13, 2017

The final phase of the $11.2 million Beachfill Nourishment Project for Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach, the extension of two stormwater outfall pipes at Virginia and Maryland Avenues, began March 6. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company has been hired for the outfall repair work and is starting equipment delivery the week of March 13. Outfall construction is expected to be completed in June. The crew will be working on one pipeline at a time, starting at Maryland Avenue. During this work a 200 foot wide section of the beach from the Boardwalk to shoreline will be closed.

During the past eight years, wave action has caused damage to the outfalls at Maryland and Virginia Avenues. As part of this Beachfill Nourishment Project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company calls for the extension of two ocean stormwater outfall pipes (at Maryland and Virginia Avenues). Work involves erecting a cofferdam to provide for dry working conditions and the installation of new ductile iron pipe extensions. The new outfalls will have a more robust design to withstand storm damage with steel pipe added for strength with an enhanced support structure around the pipe. The cofferdam is then removed after the work is complete. The City budgeted sufficient funds and will pay $946,500 for their portion of the outfall repairs.
