The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners will hold a special virtual meeting at 9 am Thursday, November 4, to discuss Sussex County’s request to purchase a portion of the permitted daily average waste load allocation associated with the city’s ocean outfall capacity. Questions and comments from the public will be received during this meeting.
Sussex County officials have approached the City of Rehoboth Beach with a proposal to procure some of the excess capacity of the city’s ocean outfall, as permitted by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), as well as a portion of the waste load allowed for biological oxygen demand (BODs) and total suspended solids (TSS).
“The city’s priorities are to protect our greatest natural resources – our beautiful beach and the Atlantic Ocean – and to provide services to our residents in a fiscally responsible manner,” says Mayor Stan Mills. “It appears that the county’s proposal will not impact the quality of water being released into the ocean and that this partnership could bring a good deal of financial benefit to our wastewater customers. This is a proposal worth exploring, and the commissioners and I are eager to hear from our residents.”
The proposal is expected to be discussed further at the Commissioners’ workshop at 9 am Monday, November 8.
