Commissioners Support Canal Dock Project

Jul 09, 2019

At the workshop meeting on Monday, July 8, the commissioners voted to support the Grove Park Canal Access Project to completion. The $1 million project includes in the development plan access to the canal via a pier and dock that accommodates two 30’ pontoon boats and a kayak/canoe launch. The terminus design is ADA compliant and ties into the existing Rehoboth Beach Museum site and complements its existing architecture. The Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Improvement Association (LRCIA) is fundraising for the project and has received a number of grants. The LRCIA is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with no paid staff. It is composed of a board of directors active in promoting the communities of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Its mission is to improve the appearance and functionality of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal corridor in order to better serve residents and visitors to the Cape Region of Delaware. If the City decides to provide funds, it must take a different vote than the one approved on Monday. The commissioners vote of support allows the project organizers to move forward with the design phase and the project is anticipated to be out to bid in the fall. For more information on the LRCIA, contact Mark Carter at 302-684-1000, ext.225 or Scott Thomas at 302-856-1818.
